Forbes 50 > 50

Kay Firth-Butterfield is considered one of the foremost experts on the responsible use of AI and machine learning. A former barrister and judge in England, she moved to the U.S. in 2008 to become a professor researching human rights. She published a book on her research in 2011, and one specific chapter on humans and intelligent machines thrust her into the spotlight as an AI expert. Firth-Butterfield received what is believed to be the world’s first title of “Chief AI Ethics Officer” from a Texas startup in 2014; in 2023, after stepping down from a six-year tenure as the World Economic Forum’s first head of AI and machine learning, she founded Good Tech Advisory to help companies and governments implement guidelines around AI.
